You Would Not Expect This in a Sorting Room

Some stories stay with you because they feel close to home. People working side by side. Hands busy. Time shared. Purpose found in simple things. That is what you see in the sorting room.

In March, the sorting space shifted. Tables moved. Walkways cleared. And then came the shelves. Proper shelves. Built by one of our own. Manual followed, tools working hard, and not a single “where does this piece go” moment. Now everything has a place. It looks tidy. It feels calm. You walk in and think, this works.

The feedback has been simple and honest. Those working in the space notice it straight away. Those coming in for arts and crafts notice it too. “It looks so nice.” “Much easier to move around.” “Everything is in place.” And best of all, fewer moments of “Where did that go?” Small change. Big difference.
There is a steady rhythm. Bags are opened. Clothes are sorted. Items are folded and placed where they belong. Work happens side by side, with quick, witty conversations in between. It is familiar in the best way. Showing up. Doing your part. Being part of something that matters.

And there is Jan.
Jan brings her own kind of energy. In March, she came dressed for Paddy’s Day in full green, ready for the occasion. She often arrives with a different outfit, a bit of fun, something to make people smile.
You never quite know what she will turn up in next, and that is part of the joy. It lifts the room without trying.

Then came a familiar face. Margaret, our former Secretary and long-time volunteer, stopped by for a visit. It felt like a small homecoming. A reminder that this place holds more than stock. It holds shared time, friendships, and years of care.
The story is simple. The space improves. The team grows. What matters stays the same. People find purpose in simple work. People find connection. People find a place to belong.
And there is more to come. Starting April 17th, the shop will open on Fridays, from 9am - 2pm. More time. More hands. More chances to be part of something good.
If you have been thinking about coming in, now is a good time.
There is a place for you at the table.
